Mike Cooke Group continues its’ rapid expansion drive

December 2007

The Mike Cooke Group of Companies has announced new expansion plans, with the simultaneous opening of three brand new Group branches in North London; the new outlets at Wood Green High Street, Barnet High Street and Edmonton Green Shopping Centre will take the group’s entire array of services to an ever expanding customer base.

Most notably, Holiday Air, the new travel subsidiary of MCG, will move into a purpose built new facility on Barnet High Street, one of North London’s busiest thoroughfares. The move follows the unprecedented success enjoyed by Holiday Air which has become one of the leading Sri Lankan travel and tour operators in the United Kingdom in the short time since the company’s inception.

The Wood Green High Street and Edmonton Shopping Centre branches will add to the growing portfolio of Bureau de Change locations operated by the Currency Exchange Corporation and its’ retail arm Best Exchange. The newest expansion of MCG comes on the back of several years of unprecedented growth for the Group; revenues and earnings have hovered around the 35% growth mark for the best part of the past 3 years, during which time MCG has rapidly expanded its’ service range, particularly for the Sri Lankan expatriate community in the UK.

MCG LAUNCHES LANKA TIMES IN MELBOURNE

JANUARY 2008

UKLanka.net Ltd, the publishing arm of the Mike Cooke Group of Companies has announced the launch of a brand new community-specific publication in Australia. Lanka Times will be a monthly news and information tabloid that will join UKLanka Times, UKAsia Times and www.uklanka.net in the stable of community media outlets owned and published by the Mike Cooke Group.

With Lanka Times, MCG intends to build on its strong standing within the Sri Lankan community in Australia. Fastcash, the global money transfer subsidiary of the Group already operates its’ largest subsidiary outside the British Isles in Australia; Melbourne-based Currency Exchange Services Australia are the leading money remittance service to Sri Lanka from Down Under. Another MCG subsidiary, House of Lanka, has operations in Australia.

Lanka Times is a further expansion of the Groups’ services specifically aimed at the Sri Lankan community in Australia; Mr Michael Fernandez, the Managing Editor of Lanka Times commented at the launch, “We have numerous publications aimed at this burgeoning community but there has long been a sense of dull uniformity in what these publications provide their readership; we aim to provide our readers with a far wider reaching collection of creative features spanning all aspects of Sri Lankan life around the world; from personalities and events to travel and human interest.”

The launch of Lanka Times was held at the Melbourne offices of MCG and was attended by Mr Sanath Jayasuriya, the cricketing icon and global brand ambassador of the Mike Cooke Group.

A perfect match
Sri Lankan Icon Sanath Jayasuriya signs on as MCG brand ambassador
Sanath Jayasuriya with Mr. Mike Cooke, Chairman and Managing Director of MCG

The Mike Cooke Group of Companies, the hugely popular London-based Sri Lankan business group has announced the signing of one of Sri Lanka’s most famous cricketing sons as its’ global brand ambassador. MCG – which owns Fastcash, the household name in Fast and Secure Money Transfers to Sri Lanka as well as a range of other products and services aimed specifically at the global Sri Lankan expatriate community – has obtained the services of none other than Sri Lankan opener Sanath Jayasuriya, one of the most celebrated and successful cricketers of the modern era.

It is the first such instance of a Sri Lankan corporate entity outside the Island signing on an internationally recognized sporting icon as a brand ambassador. Sanath, or the Master Blaster as he is universally known, will exclusively promote MCG’s array of financial, travel, e-commerce, gift and publishing businesses in the major markets where MCG has a presence, including the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States.

Born in Matara in 1969, Sanath Jayasuriya has become synonymous with some of the most unforgettable moments in Sri Lanka’s short cricket history, not least, his unprecedented exploits during the 1996 World Cup which played no small part in securing Sri Lanka’s most famous sporting triumph. Renowned as one of the most uncompromising strikers of the cricket ball, Jayasuriya’s consistency with both bat and ball is legendary; with a staggering 19,000 runs in both forms of international cricket as well as nearly 400 ODI and Test wickets, Jayasuriya has been one of Sri Lanka’s most valuable cricketers since his debut way back in 1991.

Recognizing the consistency and the sheer power of personality that Sanath has on and off the field, Mr. Mike Cooke, the Chairman and Managing Director of the Mike Cooke Group of companies approached Sanath during the batsman’s recent stint for Lancashire in the English County Championship. After several weeks of discussion, the agreement was finalized during a ceremony at the MCG offices in Colombo on the 03rd of September. As part of this long term commitment with the Mike Cooke Group of Companies, Sanath Jayasuriya will travel to various locations around the world on behalf of the company endorsing the entire range of Group services in between bringing glory to Sri Lanka cricket.

Mr. Mike Cooke, commenting on this landmark signing, said, “My roots are in Sri Lanka’s rural heart of Anuradhapura and I take great pride in what my company and I have achieved internationally. This is something I share with Sanath Jayasuriya, a simple boy from Matara, who, today, doesn’t need any introduction to the global Sri Lankan community nor to the international cricket-loving public. His supreme skill on the cricket field, consistency over nearly two decades of service to Sri Lanka Cricket, integrity and valour in the face of numerous obstacles have been incomparable. The values of quality and integrity that Sanath stands for are the same values that the Mike Cooke Group has long subscribed to and I believe this is a perfect partnership. Sanath’s image and personality will undoubtedly complement my organization as it expands and consolidates its’ positions in the various sectors that it is involved in.”

For Sanath Jayasuriya, a man who has promoted some of the subcontinent’s most famous brands and has become the face of Sri Lankan cricket around the world, the agreement with MCG is a natural evolution. “MCG has always been at the forefront of the expatriate Sri Lankan community in the United Kingdom and elsewhere and it’s an absolute pleasure to be part of the company’s excellence. The company’s association with me personally and with Sri Lanka cricket as a whole goes back some way. I was invited to be featured on the cover of the first issue of UKLanka Times and of course the company was one of the sponsors of Sri Lanka’s successful tour of the British Isles in 2006.”

Established in 1999, the Mike Cooke Group of companies has become synonymous with a wide range of high quality services, with a particular emphasis on serving the large Sri Lankan expatriate communities in the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States. The company has seen unprecedented growth, particularly over the past 4 years; a result of its’ exhaustive marketing and promotional activities which will no doubt be augmented by the signing of one of the world’s most explosive cricketers as brand ambassador. Among MCG’s most recognizable services is Fastcash, the number 1 Money Transfer service to Sri Lanka from the United Kingdom and Australia with a customer base of in excess of 40,000 expatriate Sri Lankans. The company today also includes Holiday Air, launched a mere 6 months ago and already the most talked about Sri Lankan travel services provider in the UK and Australia. Among MCG’s other notable brands are BEST EXCHANGE, the company’s staple retail and wholesale Foreign Exchange operation, UKLanka Times, the premier, glossy, Lifestyle publication for expatriate Sri Lankans as well as UKLanka.net, the foremost news and information portal for UK based Sri Lankans. Also in the MCG stable are House of Lanka, a unique gift delivery service to Sri Lanka and MC Entertainments, the MCG events management and music publishing arm.

A Home of One’s Own
Mike Cooke Group ties up with Hatton National Bank to promote housing loans in Sri Lanka
Sanath Jayasuriya with Mr. Mike Cooke, Chairman and Managing Director of MCG

The Mike Cooke Group of Companies has entered in to an exclusive agreement with Sri Lanka’s Hatton National Bank to promote HNB’s new Shanthi Housing Loan scheme in the United Kingdom. Under the deal, Fastcash Financial Services, the full-owned subsidiary of MCG, will promote and market Shanthi Housing loans to UK-based Sri Lankan expatriates looking for home finance. The joint venture between MCG and Hatton National Bank is the first instance of an independent Sri Lankan corporate entity in the UK marketing the services of an established banking services provider.

The Shanthi Home Loans scheme will offer expatriate Sri Lankans financing for a variety of residential construction purposes including for the purchase of land, home construction, second home construction, apartments and home improvements. Up to 75% of loans will be provided by HNB. Applicants can request loans in British Pounds, US Dollars or Sri Lankan Rupees.

Hatton National Bank, which was named Sri Lankan Bank of the Year 2007 by Banker magazine, identified the need of providing housing finance a decade ago, pioneering the concept amongst private sector commercial banks. Over a period of time HNB has introduced various value additions and incentives in granting Home Loans. The recently introduced “Tripartite Agreement” with tested property developers has immensely helped Sri Lankan expatriates, to purchase condominium apartments and own a 2nd home in their native country.

The Mike Cooke Group is the largest privately owned Sri Lankan business group in the United Kingdom. Its primary line of business is Fastcash, one of the most recognizable names among Global Money Transfer service providers in the United Kingdom. Launched in 1999, Fastcash has established itself as the UK’s premier Money Transfer service to Sri Lanka with a customer base of more than 40,000 expatriate Sri Lankan customers.

Mike Cooke, the Chairman and Managing Director of the Mike Cooke Group commenting on the new deal, said, “Fastcash has constantly strived to provide our customers in the UK better and more varied services aside from our staple Money Remittances. What’s more, and unlike other ethnic minorities, expatriate Sri Lankans tend to maintain strong connections to their roots back home. Hence this agreement between MCG and HNB is an ideal opportunity for those looking to further strengthen that connection in a convenient, secure and reliable manner. Thousands of Sri Lankan expatriates come to the UK to work hard and better their lives; they should all be given a helping hand to put down their roots in Sri Lanka. I feel privileged to be a part of providing that assistance in partnership with a reputed and respected institution as Hatton National Bank.”

Fastcash announces new money transfer alliance with Bank of Ceylon

Fastcash, the premier money transfer service to Sri Lanka, has announced a new alliance with Bank of Ceylon, as part of new expansion plans aimed at better serving Fastcash’s core customers in the UK, Australia and the United States. The partnership was spearheaded by Fastcash Chairman and Managing Director Mr. Mike Cooke and the new Chairman of Bank of Ceylon, Dr Gamini Wickremasinghe. The alliance will enable Fastcash to increase its pay-out locations by more than 300; the beneficiaries of Fastcash Money Transfer customers will be able to collect their funds at more than 750 locations around Sri Lanka.

Mr. Mike Cooke commented, “Perhaps the most important aspect of this new partnership, - aside from the fact that Bank of Ceylon is the largest bank in Sri Lanka – is the fact that it gives Fastcash customers access to Sri Lanka’s most rural and inaccessible areas where BoC operates branches. Furthermore, not only does BoC enjoy the biggest asset base out of any of Sri Lanka’s banking organizations, it is also a thoroughly modern and sophisticated company that is at the cutting edge of banking innovation in Sri Lanka.”

A Memorandum of Understanding sealing the new alliance is set to be signed at this year’s Festival of Cricket on Sunday 15th July. Soon after the signing of the MOU, customers will be able to utilize this expanded service for transferring money to Sri Lanka.

The Currency Exchange Corporation has announced a new strategic alliance with Western Union Money Transfers through one of its’ main country agents, London-based Financial Services Group ISI.

The new alliance will augment CEC’s existing Fastcash Global Money Transfer service with Western Union transfers now becoming available at CEC branches in North London and London’s West End. MCG is engaged in a wide variety of services, chief among which are its’ retail and wholesale foreign currency trading operation, Fastcash global money transfers as well as publishing, real estate, transport and e-commerce.

Commenting on the new partnership, Mr. Mike Cooke, Chairman and Managing Director of the Mike Cooke Group said, “This new agreement will certainly expand the existing services that we offer our customers; opening up Western Union’s vast network of more than 17,000 official agent locations around the world for money transfers. Fastcash expands to New Zealand

The Mike Cooke Group of Companies continues its' rapid expansion, with the announcement that its' money remittance service Fastcash will open its' own subsidiary in New Zealand. The new country office – located in Auckland – will service the 15,000-strong Sri Lankan Diaspora community in the country. Fastcash New Zealand joins Currency Exchange Services Australia, the Fastcash Australia subsidiary as the two main hubs for Fastcash Global in the region. Company sources say, the new office in New Zealand will be the stepping stone for the company in the Asia Pacific region as it looks to tap into Diaspora markets in Japan, South Korea and the Far East.

Fastcash New Zealand will be ceremonially launched on 13th April 2011 in time for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festivities. Speaking to UKLanka Times about the new subsidiary, Mr Mike Cooke, the Chairman and CEO of the Mike Cooke Group said, "Whilst we have been active in New Zealand through various partnerships over the years, we believed it was vital to establish a fully owned subsidiary in the country, especially given the success enjoyed by the Fastcash service in Australia. Officially regulated remittances to Sri Lanka by the expatriate Sri Lankan community is absolutely vital for our country as it looks to rebuild and I believe that Fastcash is ideally placed to facilitate those remittances not just in a timely manner but one in which the customer and our homeland benefits."

Since its' establishment in 1999, Fastcash Financial Services has emerged as the leading remittances service to Sri Lanka with a customer base of more than 120,000 in the UK, Australia and the United States. That success has been enhanced by its' partnerships with Sri Lanka's leading banking institutions, including Commercial Bank, Hatton National Bank and Bank of Ceylon. Fastcash New Zealand is set to join similar subsidiaries in Cyprus and South Korea, servicing the large Lankan expatriate communities in those countries. Company officials also disclosed that final preparations are underway for a new remittance partnership between Fastcash and one of the leading banks in Mauritius, aimed at servicing the large Mauritian expatriate community in England.

The Mike Cooke Group has expanded in its' other business sectors as well; the Currency Exchange Corporation, the wholesale and retail Foreign Exchange trading arm of the Group has opened its' latest branch in Golders Green in North London and plans are afoot for three further locations in Greater London this year. And MCG Travel subsidiary Holiday Air recently launched 'Sun Ocean Holidays', a specialist luxury tour operator dedicated to Sri Lanka.

Fastcash Awarded Financial Services Authority License

Fastcash Money Transfers, the premier remittance service to Sri Lanka from the United Kingdom, has added yet another feather to its' cap after being granted a Payment Institution license by the Financial Services Authority. The FSA is the government regulatory body which oversees all financial institutions in Britain. The FSA license recognizes Fastcash as a Payment Institution for operations in the UK as well as the European Economic Area. A Payment Institution license is a new form of accreditation granted to all financial institutions – including High Street banks and organizations such as Visa and Mastercard – which carry out large scale cross border transactions in multiple currencies. The license was introduced under new FSA guidelines aimed at cutting down on the increasing number of unregulated and often illegal money remittance services to regions such as South Asia and the Far East.

The new Payment Institution license clears the way for Fastcash Financial Services to expedite its' proposed plan to open remittance offices in a number of European States including Germany, France, Italy and Cyprus. As the FSA licensing extends to some 26 member states of the European Economic Area, the company will not have to seek additional regulatory approval from local agencies in those countries.

The FSA license caps off a remarkable 4-year period for Fastcash and its' parent company, the Mike Cooke Group. The company has extended its' overseas network outside of Europe with the opening a wholly-owned subsidiary in New Zealand, adding to existing offices in Australia and the United States. The company's worldwide client base has expanded rapidly with more than 160,000 Sri Lankans around the world now utilizing Fastcash to remit money to Sri Lanka. Plans are currently underway to open Fastcash offices in Mauritius and South Korea. Perhaps most significantly – particularly in a time of wider economic difficulty – the company has continued to invest in offering an excellent service to its customers with a state-of-the-art online based remittance system as well as other services such as sms alerts for beneficiaries in Sri Lanka.

Mr Mike Cooke, Chairman and CEO of Fastcash commented, "The FSA license is the culmination of all the hard work put in by the team at Fastcash and the result of our long-stated ambition to champion only legitimate money transfers to Sri Lanka. The FSA has recognized the steps we have taken to only carry out remittances that will not only benefit our customers but our country as well; illegitimate money transfers are a blight on our community and our country and no doubt the new FSA guidelines will bring an end to this. Our customers can feel further secure that their hard earned money is safe with us."
